Most hyaluronic acid serums are doing less than the label suggests, and the reason is rarely the ingredient. It is the form of it.

Hyaluronic acid sits in almost every category of skincare now, from drugstore moisturisers to professional-grade serums. The difference between one that genuinely hydrates and one that pulls moisture in the wrong direction comes down to molecular weight, the surrounding formulation, and how the serum is applied.

Molecular weight changes everything

Hyaluronic acid is a long-chain sugar molecule. Its size determines what it can do.

Normal molecular weight hyaluronic acid stays at the surface, holds water above the skin, and reduces transepidermal water loss. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is small enough to penetrate the upper epidermis, where it hydrates at depth and supports the structure underneath.

Single-weight formulas only work at one level. They look hydrating in the bottle and feel hydrating on application, then the skin tightens an hour later because nothing has reached the layers that needed it.

The most effective hyaluronic acid serums use both weights. Surface hydration and deep hydration in one formula. This is how Rejuvaus formulates the dual-weight hydration complex that sits inside every i·Active™ serum, alongside ceramides, squalane and the natural moisturising factor that supports the barrier.

Matching hyaluronic acid to skin type

Dry and dehydrated skin benefits the most directly. Dehydration is a water deficit, not an oil one. A dual-weight hyaluronic acid serum, layered into a routine that also restores ceramides and lipids, addresses the underlying issue rather than masking it.

Oily and combination skin often over-produces sebum to compensate for dehydration. Hyaluronic acid is non-comedogenic and contains no oils. It hydrates without occluding pores, and well-hydrated skin frequently produces less surface oil over time.

Acne-prone skin tolerates hyaluronic acid well. The ingredient itself has no comedogenic potential, and dehydrated acneic skin can become inflamed and slower to heal. Hydration supports the barrier the actives are trying to repair.

Sensitive and reactive skin rarely reacts to hyaluronic acid because the molecule occurs naturally in the body. For skin still rebuilding after barrier damage, a serum centred on dual-weight hyaluronic acid, with anti-inflammatory support, is one of the safest places to start.

Mature skin loses hyaluronic acid steadily from the dermis with age. Topical application does not replace dermal stores, but a well-formulated serum visibly improves plumpness and texture, and pairs well with peptides and growth factors that work on the structures hyaluronic acid alone cannot reach.

Application matters as much as the formula

Hyaluronic acid binds to water. Apply it to dry skin in dry air, and it can pull moisture from deeper layers of the skin to the surface, leaving the skin tighter than it started.

Apply it to damp skin, immediately after cleansing, and follow with a moisturiser that holds the hydration in place. This is the single most important sequencing rule for hyaluronic acid, and the one most often missed.

In the Rejuvaus i·Active™ system, hyaluronic acid is not a standalone serum. It sits inside the four core serums, blended with peptides, antioxidants, tone evening complex and ceramide barrier repair, applied in one gesture across face, neck, eyelids, chest and arms. Twice daily, ten seconds, no layering.

What to look for on a label

Look for both forms of hyaluronic acid present, sodium hyaluronate (more stable, more penetrating) and hyaluronic acid in the higher-weight form. Look for ceramides, glycerin, and a barrier complex alongside it. Look at the texture, whether the formula sinks in or sits on top. And look at the rest of the routine the serum is meant to fit into, because hyaluronic acid alone is hydrating, not corrective.

Designed by Dr Garry Cussell as part of a coordinated four-serum system, dual-weight hyaluronic acid is built into every Rejuvaus formula by default. Doctor developed. Australian made. Suitable for all skin types including sensitive.

Hydration is the foundation. The choice of serum should reflect that.
